"London Can Cope With Climate Change"

Transport for London has also started installing tanks to collect rain at rail depots so that even if droughts become more frequent, as is predicted, trains can still be washed.

(Admins: can we please have one of those emoticons that shows you rolling around on the floor in uncontrollable laughter, kicking your legs about?)

Wait till the methane clathrates start venting in earnest. Will they still be wanting to wash the trains then?

 There'll be even more delays when they implement that plan ...... the wrong type of water on the line?

Then there's this stooge Fox News business shill John Stossel, who says climate change is the same as believing in ghosts - or believing in wage inequality between genders! Don't worry, he's paid to say these things. But it shows how desperate the deniers have become.

Here's the real giveaway:
“Every year, fewer people die from the weather because of fossil fuels,” the Fox Business host observed. “They are able to protect themselves."
Translation: "I'm alright Jack. I take huge money to spout these lies so I can afford to migrate when the truth hits."

They didn't say anything about the snorkels that they are going to fit on the buses and trains so that they can operate in the 7 to 14 metres of water that will overwhelm London in the next 100 years as sea levels rise! :D :D

You jest!

In The Collapse of Western Civilisation, Oreskes and Conway point out that we are highly influenced by the concept of 'statistical significance'. The effect of this is to only regard a bit of science as 'true' if there's a 95% certainty. The logic leads to the assertion that sea level rise by century end will be nearer 1 metre than 7-14m and this is what governments and policy-makers factor into their infrastructure programmes.

The outlying 5% probability is completely ignored as if it were impossible. In Oreskes' essay the low probability high consequence event came to pass and the rest, viewed from far into the future, is history.

I base my thinking on the fact that we have collapse of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets at current temperature levels and governments are "not working" towards and accepting a 2 deg C temperature rise. This means that we could see way over this.

As this ice is sitting on land well under sea level warming sea water could melt it, and is melting it, very easily indeed. The Thames barrier is being used more and more each year, much more than was expected in 50 to 100 years hence, and would be overtopped by very much less than 7 metres of sea level rise.

Spreading rumours that London will soon be flooded might just get the city to think about doing something about Climate Change instead of just ignoring it. If the City wants something government would rush to oblige.

Of course, it's not just the rise in mean sea level that is the problem, but the effect this rise has on subsequent high tides, storm surges, etc. That, coupled with generally more volatile weather, will surely lead to bigger and bigger problems for coastal / estuarine communities.

So, from once a year to once a week? Crikey.

Still, only 16 grand a time, eh? Peanuts.
