Reading the article, scientists are now trying to breed a variety with the beneficial weed genes in. I predict this will be a failure. The original weedy wild rice had millions of years to evolve, and many attempts which failed. There is little chance of making a long term competitor. There are some things which humans cannot do, and one of them is getting the upper hand when competing with nature.
