Radio 4 news at 6 and 7am carried a story of Fatih Birol's talk yesterday in which he said that there was no chance that we can stick below 2 degrees of global warming with the current policies being adopted around the world. Roger Harobin described it as saying the unsayable.

And talking of Fatih Birol, here's a video of him talking yesterday about oil prices and the threat to global economy.

I've met Roger. We discuss disaster literature, he was reading Oryx and Crake when we got to know each other.

Bob Watson, Chief Scientific Adviser for Defra, said the same a couple of months ago.

And there's some group who estimate the global temperature rise from the policies agreed upon at each COP. Can't remember who they are at the moment but it's always grim reading.

I don't like the thought of rising seas...that'd put York on the coast and I might be able to see an offshore wind farm

I think Birol is just trying to get people off oil before oil leaves people.

Good luck to him with that !

Who'da thunk it, all efforts to preserve the common [s]land[/s] air failed in trajedy.

Does this mean we can move onto the sensible options of trying to mitigate whatever the future may bring?
If only we'd not blown hundreds of billions of pounds already.

Urm emission control is an attempt at mitigation. Whilst +2C may be all certain, there is increasing degrees of freedom over +3, +4 and +5 degrees.
