Once you take heating, shelter and clothing into account, that sounds optimistic! But it feels about right.

You can then spend more of the time sat around the cooking fire talking rather than chewing and so pass on more information and increasing the overall store of information available to mankind to take forward as a cultural and educational heritage.

Interesting figures ken which touch on conversations I've been having elsewhere . I don't suppose you recall what the similar figures would be for hunter gatherer groups would be? Obviously going to be higher than 1 else they'd never be able to reproduce but presumably not that much higher as from what I've seen on documentaries they seem to start the kids gathering food early .

The original multi task for women. Having the toddlers in tow while gathering both helps train the child for adulthood while feeding himself under his mothers supervision. A small child will not put many berries in the basket but his stomach will be filled and his face a messy grin. Each year as they get older their net production and skill increases.

Shades of the time my daughter was a toddler. I'm done take her outside and show her the plants and she'd happily sit there stripping and eating the blackcurrants , strawberries and peas. Her mother was more concerned that the fruit hadn't been washed first .

Depending on what the air qualityâ€™s like of course, unwashed (and unsprayed) fruit is probably better for people generally.

We all have to eat our pound of dirt and all that as they say. Only thing that gets sprayed in our garden is rainwater and it's not done my daughter any harm . Probably a bit of bad parenting some might say but we've also eaten the cherrries and seen who can spit the stones the furthest and eaten an apple while still on the tree to just leave a core hanging.

The vision of that.. I imagine one of my own munchkins in their day, astride a tree limb using very sharp new teeth to nibble at that apple with a big grin at achieving success. makes me laugh. I'm sure you had a very good day with that.

My grandchildren are, this minute, popping up to the bedroom window cill and picking salad leaves from a big tray that they helped me plant a few months ago.

I must remember to get them to try the "eating the apple on the tree trick." It might encourage them to eat more although when they are ripe they often pick an apple in the morning on their way out to school.
