EDF Defends Need For Nuclear Power In UK Despite Japan

WSJ - 17/03/11

French nuclear giant Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR), which has been pinning its fortunes on a global nuclear revival, Thursday defended the need for atomic power in the U.K. despite the Japan crisis and said a review of the sector following the earthquake mustn't unduly delay plans for new plants.

The comments from Vincent de Rivaz, chief executive of the company's U.K. subsidiary EDF Energy, come as the U.K. government said it would wait for a review into the implications of the nuclear accident in Japan before proceeding with key steps to facilitate the country's multi-billion-pound new nuclear program that is being led by EDF.

"The events in Japan do not change the need for nuclear in Britain," de Rivaz said.

I hope they've stopped digging at Hinkley. You know, first law of holes and all that.

I don't think it's digging holes that's the problem. It's what they do inside the thing they build in the hole.
