German nuke reprieve?

All of Germany's 17 nuclear power plants will stay in service until the
government reaches a final decision on the country's future 'energy
concept', which is expected this Autumn, the German weekly Der Spiegel said in
its Monday issue.

An informal agreement was reached during last week's meeting of the 'big
four' German utilities RWE, E.ON, EnBW and Vattenfall with government
officials in the Chancellor's office, according to Der Spiegel.

The agreement would allow the two oldest reactors, EnBW's Neckarwestheim
1 and RWE's Biblis A to continue to operate until the German government
passed rules for the general prolongation of nuclear power in Germany, Der
Spiegel said.

According to the German nuclear phase-out law from 2002, which is still
in force, the two reactors would have to be taken out of service in Spring
and early Summer -- just before the phase-out law was expected to be
abolished.
