Hinkley C Start up

Is nuclear fission going to make a comeback and plug the gap in our energy needs? Will nuclear fusion ever become energetically viable?

EDF expects to miss its own deadline for deciding whether to build Britain’s first new nuclear plant in a generation, the Telegraph can disclose.

The French energy giant announced in October that it planned to take a final investment decision on the £16bn Hinkley Point C plant by July, after striking a landmark subsidy deal with government.

But it now believes that an ongoing European Commission investigation into whether the subsidies are illegal state aid will not be fully resolved until autumn, forcing its decision on the Somerset plant back until then.

The delay could threaten EDF’s plans to deliver first power from the plant in 2023 – a timescale it had said was “subject to a final investment decision by July 2014”.

Oh, it's the 11th of March. Now there's a date for nuclear history.

It will be interesting to see which way that goes. Care to place any bets?

The one in Finland just had its first criticality. I'd hope any design issues with the fueling will be bottomed out in time for it not to impact Hinckley much.

And how many years late is that and how much over budget, I wonder?

How did boiling water get so complicated!
The MEH programme involves electrical and mechanical installations encompassing around 4,000 rooms.

Works will involve 380km of pipework, 20,000 valves, with thousands of welds and associated radiography, and 9000 km of cabling.

Hinckley c delayed another year to 2027 and cost goes up another 3billion

Decommisioning fund for current nukes underperforms on its investments, requiring an extra 10 billion from the government in the last 2 years.

Energy shortfall likely between existing plants closing and new ones openibng

Who would have thought it?

Original target was 2018, almost a full decade late.

..........
Boiling water is quite easy, it is the control mechanism for the hydrogen bomb used for the heating that is the problem! Get rid of the control mechanism and the whole thing becomes a lot easier and also a lot quicker!!
