Russia to disconnect nuclear plant from grid
I really wish I was not reading this.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/ ... -from-grid
" During a shift between grid systems, the plant would be reliant only on a back-up diesel-powered generator, with no further options should that fail. After only 90 minutes without power the reactors would reach a dangerous temperature."

I reported this 10th august on the Ukraine thread. Sometimes it takes weeks for MSM to catch
Up.
Up.
Re: Russia to disconnect nuclear plant from grid
The plant is now disconnected when the last power line was damaged by fire. Reportedly the other three lines were previously damaged by Russian shelling. 2 of the 6 reactors are currently fuelled and were operating. Attempts are being made to reconnect one line, but it is not clear if to the Ukrainian or Russian grid.
UPDATE
now reported that whilst not connected to the grid, one line remains to a nearby thermal plant which provided power for reactor cooling. The last grid line has been reconnected

There is a touch scary deja vu about this.
I seem to remember Chernobyl was set off during a test of response to loss
of external power and part of the problem concerned attempts to counteract instability of the
reactor at low power output.

Re: Russia to disconnect nuclear plant from grid
Personally I think we need the West to look at bringing this war to a quick end. Maybe launching some cruise missiles into Russia and Ukraine before that Ukrainian power plant explodes and causes mass death across Europe.
Re: Russia to disconnect nuclear plant from grid
I don't think that a few cruise missiles would do much to help.automaticearth2 wrote: ↑26 Aug 2022, 21:22 Personally I think we need the West to look at bringing this war to a quick end. Have you seen how big these countries are?
Re: Russia to disconnect nuclear plant from grid
The nuclear plant has been upgraded since the days of chernobyl. It has external containment around the cores designed to survive a direct hit by a small missile, if not two direct hits. It has improved monitoring and it has staff well trained in the lessons learned. That is not to say that Russia is wise enough to leave the staff to get on with their job,s, and they could trigger a major emergency which would be very difficult to handle in the middle of a war zone. However, are we sure Ukraine is not too reckless to fire back if Russian troops fire from close to the plant?
It is scenario's like this which make me anti nuclear. Each time we design a fool proof safety measure, the world finds a better fool.

Re: Russia to disconnect nuclear plant from grid
Apparently the Russians there are mistreating the staff, have already killed one, and have parked a load of military vehicles in the turbine hall - which blocks access if emergency services are needed there (e.g. if there's a fire).

And the russians have now detained the manager of the nuclear power plant.

Renewed concerns by the UN and others about loss of grid connection to nuclear power station.

Re: Russia to disconnect nuclear plant from grid
I read that Russia has given all the power station staff Russian passports whether they want them or not.
Probably they will be subject to Russian treason and sedition laws as well whatever they might be.
