Councillor 'disappointed' over solar farm approval

A councillor said he was "deeply disappointed" that plans for a giant solar farm in Lincolnshire have been approved.

The Gate Burton site south of Gainsborough will cover more than 1,690 acres (684 hectares).

The new energy security secretary, Ed Miliband, said solar power was "crucial to achieving net zero".

Conservative county councillor Colin Davie said the development had attracted considerable local opposition.

“I have repeatedly said that these enormous infrastructure projects should not be dumped in our county, and ruin the quality of life of our residents," Mr Davie said.
Not sure I can comment on this without being abusive towards this individual. "This is one of the wealthiest parts of the country. We still vote Conservative here. Solar farms should therefore be built elsewhere, because people here can't cope with such things."

A lot of folk like that in Lincolnshire!

1,690 acres may seem like a lot, but it's trivial next of the area used for energy crops, biofuels, feedstock for biogas digesters.

Solar's rise over the last decade has taken pretty much everyone by surprise.

The best place for solar panels is on the South facing roof of the person that will consume the power. Supposedly the EROEI of rooftop solar is around 14 and that of solar farms is less than 10. I agree that solar farms are not that bad in terms of area used but they are still taking up land. This "using up farmland" argument is also being used in Australia - a place that is not that short of land.

The statistics don't suggest that Lincolnshire is one of the wealthiest parts of the country. I think it is more a rural country than the UK as a whole which could explain why. Even Nottinghamshire is richer than Lincolnshire which surprised me.
