With the exception of nuclear power I would say yes. The only Nuclear power plant in the State has shut down and others in the North East region are soon to follow. There is quite a bit of Hydro power including Niagara falls and imported James bay power from Quebec. Some wood chip, wind, and solar but the bulk of it is fast becoming natural gas. Coal is still on line but has been fading due to prohibitive regulations.

I have to doubt that the electricity generated by the dams is not needed. They were built at great cost decades ago because they were needed and the population and economy has only grown sense.

I wonder what it is "needed" for. Air-con probably consumes a fair bit but that doesn't come under "need". There is probably a large amount of wasteage in general too, since people are generally lazy when it comes to being prudent. Even if that were not the case, does it justify causing extinction? There is the tourist industry to consider too, is the electricity supply worth more? The petition has closed so there's no mileage in that, and with the incoming president, I doubt he could give a toss unless it makes him personally loads-a-money.
