The Guardian - 03/07/12

In this short video produced by Greenpeace, a homeless polar bear wanders around London, ignored by everyone and forced to forage for food.

Voiced by Jude Law and with a soundtrack from Radiohead, the film highlights the plight of the Arctic.

In the last 30 years, we’ve lost as much as three-quarters of the floating ice cap at the top of the world.

The volume of that sea ice measured by satellites in the summer, when it reaches its smallest, has shrunk so fast that scientists say it’s now in a ‘death spiral’.

For over 800,000 years, ice has been a permanent feature of the Arctic ocean. It’s melting because of our use of dirty fossil fuel energy, and in the near future it could be ice free for the first time since humans walked the Earth.

This would be not only devastating for the people, polar bears, narwhals, walruses and other species that live there - but for the rest of us too.

The ice at the top of the world reflects much of the sun’s heat back into space and keeps our whole planet cool, stabilising the weather systems that we depend on to grow our food.

Protecting the ice means protecting us all.

Thinking about the MSM distrust thread, I know many here do not trust Mail on Sunday except as a fire starter, and columnist (not journalist) Peter Hitchèns wouldn't even burn, he's too wet about the ears.

However, many do read this so-called newspaper and, presumably, take what it prints as some kind of truth.

This article, Polar bears and climate change: what does the science say? just shows to what lengths truth-tellers have to go to in order to present the correct picture. This, I suppose, is the point of why Crockford and her fan-club-of-one, Hitchèns, take money for spewing garbage - it obfuscates and delays.

PS I had to put an accent in Hitchèns's name, because if I don't, it gets replaced with a very appropriate word: Hitchens.
