Some of the story takes place in such a location...and knowing the typical layout of a rig, terms, etc would be very useful!
I happen to have a copy of the Platform Visitors Guide for Auk A.

It's a very small & old little handbook - but has deck layouts, diagrams, data, escape routes etc.

The rig is old and rusty so things may be different now ....

PM me if you want to borrow it.

Probably not the level of detail you're looking for, but this recent Independent article may give you some inspiration if you haven't seen it yet...good North Sea journalism:

One thing Alex: the oil rig world changed after the Piper Alpha disaster.

For example, manning was reduced where possible.

Perhaps the Cullen Report on the disaster would include lots of details on rig design etc?

(I can't find a copy on the web but it will be there somewhere)

The Public Inquiry into the Piper Alpha Disaster, Cullen, The Honourable Lord, HM Stationery Office, 1990.

Also there are now 'crew hotels' in the North Sea ,,, and over 570 oil & gas rigs out there too!

This site might be useful: http://www.rigworker.com/jobtypes.shtml
They have a manual you can download too.
