The Great Climate Fight

Post by Potemkin Villager »

This issues raised in these two CH4 programmes will be very familiar to folk on this forum but worth
a look as clearly showcase the lies and appalling lack of ambition of most of the political classes including
a ludicrous porky that domestic gas has only 25% of the emissions of imported gas!

Posh boy Cameron in particular has a lot to answer for.

I will have a look at them if I can download. I was thinking when you said CH4 you were talking about methane.

LNG creates a lot of emissions. It takes about 20% of the gas supplied to the liquefaction plant to power all the liquefaction equipment.

The real damage was done by the Blair government who had the money to build more nuclear or even tidal plants. By the time Cameron came around the country was heading towards bankruptcy.

I didn't realise it was that bad. The impression put out though is that all imported gas creates the same amount of excess emissions.
There is not the slightest suggestion that we should be using less CH4, wherever it originates!

Apart from the energy cost of liquefaction and regasification, there is the cost of actually powering the ships and keeping the gas refrigerated during transit. Both of these are presumably powered by the lng cargo itself, which would at least make the shipping less co2 intensive that regular shipping, which burns bunker oil.

At some point, as this global LNG expansion continues, one of these ships will blow up, accident, terrorism, act of war etc - it'll be a very big bang.

As far as I'm aware, Channel 4 makes a hell of a lot of its stuff available for free (with ads of course) on its YouTube channel. You can also download a Channel 4 app for certain devices which makes it even easier. Whilst rarely concerning issues discussed in this forum, the have some damned good drama and often a good film, all free: you can look away when the ad breaks come up.

Yes, and even if the explosion was an accident, consider the effects on natural gas prices and availability, if enough people believe that the fire and explosion was an attack.
The owner and operator of the blown up ship would no doubt prefer to blame enemy action, rather than any deficiency in their own safety procedures.
