The Bone Clocks

Post by leroy »

Anyone read this? Best PO fiction that I have come across. Chilling view of Ireland/England in a few years time.

On the (ever increasing) list. :D

I assume it's a book recommendation.

A review of The Bone Clocks is available here

I think I'll stick to non fiction. I've got plenty of that to keep up with at the moment.

Really worth a go IMO. David Mitchell is always good, and to see his imagination applied so close to home, describing the relentless repercussions of resource depletion and climate change with this level of skill, is a unique experience. 2043 is really not far away..

Having skimmed through the review I think I will pass on this one. When it is well done speculative fiction can be a good medium to explore issues that can become very turgid and sleep inducing when written about literally.

Quite enjoying "Wolf Hall" at the moment though it is quite heavy going.

A bit late as the movie is coming out this week but "Ready player one" is a good read especially if you were around when electronic games first made the scene. Plenty of evil corporate villains and plot twists.

It is done to the best standard I have seen in this novel. Wolf Hall is a great book too.

Absolutely, I read this a few months ago. It's good. Those under 40 might miss a few of the references though!

Fille recommended me 'The Bone Clocks' and I read it. Damn glad I did. The main character's (almost) my contemporary and it spans the term of her life till old age.

The short bit of dialogue about religion, in Ireland, is one of the most terrifying bits of dystopian story I've ever read, and it isn't even violent.

The entire chapter about the egotistical writer, which I had trouble getting through because it was so BORING, can be skipped without losing the plot.

The dystopian aspect isn't the main point of the tale, really: the plot is mainly about 2 opposing forces fighting, with humanity - human minds - as their battliefield. I can't say it's exactly a page-turner - it's a little too abstruse for that - but I liked it for its sheer surreal-ness and its atmosphere.
