I got the chance to go up a wind turbine

Can Wind Power meet the energy needs of Britain in the 21st century or is it just a lot of overblown hype?

I got the chance to go up a wind turbine

Post by BritDownUnder »

Recently I got the chance to go up a wind turbine as part of my work.
It's a long tiring climb up a ladder and ride in a tiny lift (most of the way, 70 out of 100 metres was by lift to be honest).

View inside the nacelle (the box at the top where the blades attach to).

View from outside the nacelle.

Enjoy.
Apologies for the big pictures.

Under construction, 10 were going round, 20 were not. It is located near Canberra about 900 metres in altitude. Landscape looks a bit like Yorkshire. The one I was on was not going round as the blades were locked so that (very brave) people could get into the hub where the three blades join to the turbine.

LJ.
As for the heights I have one simple rule - don't look down. Inside the turbine tower, the tube, you cannot really see all the way down as it is divided into four sections with 'floors' between them so you can only really see about 25 metres up or down at any time.

The amount of vibration at the top of the turbine was quite large, I was told about two feet in total, due to the buffeting effect of winds. Not really like a boat rocking, more like a sliding motion.

It does look a bit like the Wolds, doesn't it? Also thanks for the reminder that not all of Australia is parched desert a la film 'Walkabout'...
