So what we do is we take advantage of increase flooding, and by building walls along what are now motorways and then flooding them we can turns them into canals.

A simple engineering project I am sure. :D

it would be an interesting sight. Cannel boats doing 70 down the motorway :lol:

But we'd still have to build locks to cope with the hills (in a car you might get the impression the motorway is flat but try cycling along one and you'll soon find different :wink: )

My dream is to have fleets of land yachts sailing up and down the motorways - they can achieve quite remarkable speeds on pure windpower - you can imagine commercial load carrying versions with several masts (like clippers) and smaller individual vessels nipping in amoungst them.
When the wind dies they have to switch to auxilliary pedal; power (or wait)

Of course if human labour gets cheap you could have a pedal powered version of a quinquereme (pedals instead of oars) with 50 slaves pedalling away like fury and a little guy with a drum beating time and a big guy with a whip encouraging them...

There are many potential uses for motorways

I like both of these ideas. If the bridges were removed we could go for kite powered transporters. Using kites means no mast is needed. I have actually tested a kite on my small (6.5 m) boat and they do work. See See www.kiteship.com for example. There are some photos of a pickup being pulled by a kite. We will need to knock the bridges down first :-)

Well while you are building you walls around the M25 I will be trying to grow food and maybe trying to build my own little wall to keep out the Huns! :D lol

I'm also up for removing the bridges and using kites. I'm a keen user of power kites and have a kite buggy, along with 2, 3 and 5.5m kites. On a rough grass field I've had the buggy up to 30mph (I have a speedo), but people using them on beaches often hit 60mph. No reason not to tow a trailer either. I reckon these things would be great on the motorways.

The only downsides are
  • 1. It hurts falling off on grass, so on tarmac you'll need heavy padding.
    2. You need the wind to be in roughly the right direction, so you might not be able to travel exactly when you want to.
