Our transport is heavily oil-based. What are the alternatives?

I can't remember who this is attributed to, but even $20 oil is unaffordable if nobody has $20. Similarly, a £9.99 flight is unaffordable if the whole economy has crashed.

Maybe Michael O'Leary sees himself going into the recycling business?...

I can't understand why it is uneconomic to recycle the fuselages! Aluminium of course his highly senible to recycle considering the huge embedded energy.

I suppose the logic is that Ryanair et al have to keep making massive capital investments in high embedded energy products or the economy will crash.

Michael O'Leary wants to play last man standing. He just wants to say, "See, told ya, my business model works." What comes after that point is another question...

With cancelled flights and thoroughly pissed off pilots the gruppenfuhrer seems to be digging himself into a bigger and bigger hole. I guess it is just market forces or it could well be peak ryanair.

I am not an airline user so I'm not really that interested but this cancellation fiasco strikes me as pure O'Leary - basically, feck the customer.

BBC: Ryanair cancels another 18,000 flights

This bit smacks of BS:
The airline again denied it had a pilot shortage as some have claimed: "In the current year less than 100 of over 2,000 captains left Ryanair (mainly retirements or to long haul airlines) and less than 160 F.O's [first officers] who have mainly left to join long haul airlines."

Ryanair added that it had more than 2,500 pilots on a waiting list and had offered jobs to more than 650 new pilots who would be join by May next year.
If pilot numbers are what Ryanair claim there would not be this number of flight cancellations. The holiday rota cock-up as they claim sounds highly implausible as well.

Yes, there's more to it than they're letting on. O'Leary can be a devious bastard. I reckon there's gonna be a shocker round the corner.

Now the CAA are getting involved:

BBC: CAA "furious" with Ryanair law breach
Mr Haines singled out Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary for particular criticism, telling Radio 5live: "Michael himself said he wasn't going to pay for passengers to fly on other airlines. That's against the law.

"My concern with Ryanair, and the reason we are speaking so openly, is they say one thing and yet they don't follow it through."

I will stick my neck out and say it is backwards and downwards for O'Leary from now on as we are now in post peak Ryanair territory. All the BS about never ending growth, new routes, massive new plane purchases and acquisitions has been called out. This marks the beginning of the end of "cheap" air travel.

The situation is worsened by the stark lack of any good will whatsoever they have with anybody - customers, staff and small airports all over Europe and soon I would imagine their shareholders and creditors.

A fine example of a feck ye, cute hoor, gobshite management style.

Not helped by rising oil prices. Demand is going to exceed supply for at least the next few years, as Chinese demand accelerates, electric cars or none. Until the next global financial crisis, which will catch almost everybody out, at least. 2008 crisis coincided with $147 oil.

I hope he has hedged his fuel purchases (not).

I think that this is the beginning of the end for EasyJet.

Reminds of a nice anti-Oleary joke !

Mr o leary fancies a pint of stout after an easy days work, and walks into a bar.
"Pint of stout please"
Barman "that's one euro please"
"what excellent value, I shall come here again"
Barman "did you bring an approved pint glass ?"
"no of course not, don't you provide glasses in a bar ?"
Barman "we do, but there is a charge of one euro to use one, plus a five euro deposit"
O leary pays his 7 euros and sits down, the barman approaches and states "there is a 2 euro charge for sitting down, sir"
Oleary " I'm not paying that, I will stand"
Barman, "very well sir, that is one euro for standing"
Oleary knocks back his pint and says "enough of this, I am leaving, please return my deposit on the glass"
Barman "certainly sir" and gives customer not 5 euros but 50 euro cents.

Oleary "what's going on here, I am due 5 euros ! not 50 cents"

Barman sends for the manager who states

"all part of our standard terms and conditions here, to which you agreed by contracting to purchase refreshment services from us. Deposit on glass 5 euros, you have lost half of that by returning it dirty, it has finger prints and beer on it. Two Euro charge for sitting, but as you only sat down briefly, I have refunded 50% of that as part of our improved customer care initiative. One euro charge for standing.
Change, 50 cents. Would you like a printed bill for that sir ?"

Oleary "yes please"
Manager "that will be 68 cents please sir"
"Installers and owners of emergency diesels must assume that they will have to run for a week or more"

In a sense, oil did create the end of history. We became demi-gods, aloof from the physics of time and space. We also became aloof from the beauties of time and space – travelling above cultures and terrains and not through them. Meanwhile, Earth has evolved without a conscious humanity, but very much with humanity’s physical effects. Now, we must return to Earth – not only with scorched wings, but to degraded soils and pillaged resources.
