BBC News - 06/09/10
New car sales fell sharply in August for the second consecutive month, figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have shown.
August saw 55,305 new cars registered - down 17.5% compared with August 2009, the SMMT said.
The industry body warned that the market would remain tough for the rest of the year.
However it reiterated that it expected more than two million new cars to be sold in 2010.
That would be a 1.2% increase on 2009.

They just don't get it, do they?

To be honest though, July and August sales are surely lower anyway. '60' reg cars come out in September. So, what would be of more significant interest would be if September sales were down by a large amount.

That said though, not seen any '60' reg cars yet. 6 months ago, and 1 year ago I saw quite a lot of '10' and '59' cars during the first week of the month.
Feels a little like Sept 2008, March 2009 to me.

Over in Ireland, the dreaded Greens pushed for a scrappage scheme, enabling very rich people to save money on new vehicles and giving taxpayer money to dealers.
Next, there's incentives for very expensive electric vehicles, again touted as a 'green' solution, enabling even richer people to save money.
Strange kind of recession, eh? Anything to keep up the illusion.

Emordnilap, this was a point I made some time agao, but I got shot down in flames.
My argument was essentially that only the people with enough in the bank could benefit from these schemes (ditto with the boiler scrappage scheme) and was therefore a real toss-off for those on a tight budget, who by circumstance will have to keep running less than efficient machines.
But hey, that's life :/

Totally OT but the bloke next-door-bar-one has now spent over 1/2 an hour power-hosing his brand-new front wall, his concrete drive (possibly also new), the pavement in front of said wall and a random hire-van parked outside his house (with its door open, I now notice, and what looks like a load of electrical repair kit inside).
Mmmm sanity, I remember when it was all the rage...
