Our transport is heavily oil-based. What are the alternatives?

Quite right too. This is the low hanging fruit mitigation strategy that will work best. Electrify mass tranport and local distribution. Shift freight to electric rail and sea-freight. That way and disruptions to transport caused by increasinly unaffordable petrol or diesel will be mitigated.

Genius.

Oh well, it looks like we'll still be able to get to work and the shops after all even if it means we won't all be driving there.

So... back to the 1980s for many of us then?

I hope the music is better.

Substitution economics in action.
Exactly. And Peterbilt recently introduced Nat-Gas powered heavy duty big rig trucks so I think it now looks like we have technology in place to cover all of our bases.

What next? Perhaps the low-cost airlines kept on life support via natural gas?

I had not heard about NG fueled planes but looked it up and yes, the Russians (Tupolev) have plans for using CNG. Cleaner and cheaper than kerosene apparently.
