Another 350 reasons not to build HS2:

More than 350 wildlife sites, including nature reserves, ancient woodlands and wetlands which are home to some of Britain's rarest species, are threatened by the high-speed rail link

Time to 'rationalise' them, then.

He said building HS2 would "create and support" at least 100,000 jobs and "underpin" a further 400,000.
What's that funny smell...

There are a few people here who could do with a job. I wonder how many people in the areas covered by HS2 need one this much.

It's a shame we can't put the whole thing in a tunnel.

Then we'd get the benefits of increased rail links mostly immune to weather disruption without having to tear another gash in the countryside.

It'd make for a really boring journey, though. Oh no I've done it again...

It would cost even more, making it even more of a waste of money that could be spread around to benefit more of the UK.

CrikeyMoses! They're advertising for jobs on HS2 already! A job-alert service to which I subscribe has just sent me a bunch of them.

I notice that, in keeping with HMG's enlightened policy towards The Regions, all the jobs are based in London :)

Yeah but they're planning a railway so people from The Regions can commute to London.

But they've got to build the railway so the people from The Regions can commute to London to build the railway. So it's more jobs for London people. And it won't open until most of the people who could work on it have retired, or died!

Lke I said:
The HS2 high-speed rail project could cost more than £80bn - almost double the current estimated cost of £42.6bn, a free-market think tank has said.

The Institute for Economic Affairs (IEA) expects lobbying by local councils for extra infrastructure and design changes will inflate the cost.
