High Speed Rail link to have 2 million trees planted

Our transport is heavily oil-based. What are the alternatives?

Builders. No, really. They think that trees spoil buildings.

There's also a particular type of person "of a certain age" whom I refer to as a "path-clear" after the characteristic of napalming their gardens with weedkiller, paving over the lot, and then parking their car on the street (i.e. not in the paved former garden).

I see a fair bit of this when I'm out delivering leaflets. It's depressing.

Most modern farmers don't like 'em. They don't like animals sheltering under them in bad weather, when they could be consuming. What's more, grass doesn't do as well under trees.

Also, trees imply boundaries and fields should be big, big, big!

They don't like it when their neighbours cut trees though. My neighbouring farmer came round to complain that the boundary hedge isn't stock proof any more. All we've been doing is coppicing on my side of it, so his cows will get a nice view into some open ground that might encourage them to push through. The fact that he's trashed my hedge by "maintaining" it from his tractor cab seems unimportant .

Network rail dont like trees, leaves fall from trees and prevent new trains from working.
Trees grow without warning or notice and obstruct views of the signals, no number of emails or reports can rectify the situation, someone has to actually do something and remove or trim the offending branches.
Sometimes tees fall down and cause delay or even danger.

A lot of people think trees spoil the view and would rather see miles and miles of artificial, grazed, windswept country. Then they complain when people like me come along and want to put wind turbines on it.
