Our transport is heavily oil-based. What are the alternatives?

All very creative this thread but let's be honest - airships full of hydrogen (a gas which could be put to better use), hanging around at 1000s of feet, waiting for shuttles to go back and forth via ropes or catapults (OK, I know that bit was a joke!) - it's just not going to happen!

Still, as Einstein said: "Imagination is more important than knowledge"!

Looks like there will be a market for 'virtual holidays'.

Images of palm trees and silver sands piped to your widescreen TV whilst you sit on your sofa with your feet in a bucket of water with sand at the bottom, sipping gin with a couple of teaspoons of dessicated coconut in it.

I once worked in the Fort Knox of a certain foreign country. In the space between the gold & currency vaults many, many feet below ground the staff had painted a virtual beach scene on the concrete wall, and had brought beach chairs, low tables and wind breaks down from the surface.

It was a delightful place to have your coffee break, sitting on the beach! It certainly made a change from working near the 10 or 20 jerkin-clad Rambos with belt-fed machine guns in the adjacent vaults! (Yes, they REALLY did look like that!)

Could be a big future for this kind of work then:

Maybe travel agents could do a deal with someone like Banksy, as a way of branching out once international flights have ground to a halt. For a fee they could send someone round to your house once a year to paint a new holiday scene in your living room?!
