I seem to remember reports from the owners of F1 a few years ago predicting a need to move to a greener image in the face of an inevitable green / rising fuel price backlash. I got the distinct impression that someone high up in the organisation was peak oil aware.
They may be petrol heads with dodgy proclivities , but some of them are smart.
(I turned down a job with a local racing car manufacturer. Didn't fit my green image. )

Not that I'm defending them at all, but you generally find that with any activity with a large "audience", the main contributor to the C-footprint is not the game/gig/performance itself, but all the people who travel to it.
My main gripe about motor-racing is it's so bloody boring. And you don't really get to see the talent in the participants, not like Footie or Tennis, or opera come to that.
