IBM says it is working with the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) to examine the effect electric vehicles could have on the U.K. electricity grid. The project will also assess the infrastructure required to achieve a mass market for electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in the U.K.
IBM will lead the coordination of a consortium of companies - EDF Energy, E.ON and Imperial Consultants - in conducting the study. The project will analyze how growth in electric vehicle recharging could impact distribution networks, identify the infrastructure needed for mass-market uptake of electric vehicles, design concepts for vehicle charging-point architecture, and plan for changes that will be needed to maintain distribution networks' operation.
