Motorists who buy electric and other ultra-low-polluting cars will receive a 25per cent discount up to a maximum of £5,000 off the price, the Government announced today.
The grants will be available from January 2011 when a range of eligible vehicles are expected to be available.
Among the first cars to qualify will be so-called 'plug-in' petrol-electric hybrids, which are charged from the mains but also have a conventional petrol or diesel engine.
These include the soon to be launched Vauxhall Ampera, Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi MiEv, TATA Vista EV, and the Ford Focus electric.
