Energy futures confernce in Dublin

I was at the energy futures conference in Dublin last week, Colin Campbell and Chris Kuasky (spelling) were speaking, there were about 400 people at it and probably a 1/3 were invitees so hopefully the message was new to them. Basically it was an idiots guide to Peak oil but the Irish angle was interesting. The head of Forfais spoke as well and as they issue reports to the gov it is good that he was on side if a little optimistic

Among the opportunities

Ireland could develop wind resources to 200% of requirements, they didn?t mention wave power but I assume a similar ratio applies
Ireland being a small country ?that no one takes notice of? should try to sign preferred trading rights for oil with Libya/Canada for instance
Ireland should consider leasing one the Welsh nuclear reactors
Ireland needs to start electrifying it?s public transport

Problems

Outlined what would happen if Ireland acts 10 years in advance, 5 years in advance or waits until Peak Oil hits.

Thanks for the summary Silver. I think we are just about at Peak now, so the 10yr, 5 yr thing is probably just a tad optomistic - but maybe I am wrong.

I think Ireland needs to throw themselves into Wind big time. Also Wave and tidal seem to be good propects. As for Nuclear - well the whole population have always been very anti-nuclear, so it would amaze me if they did a full u-turn and supported it. Mind you if it was in Wales that would suit them rightly - NIMBY!

Snow - If we get all these interconnectors we will be importing nuclear by the back door, but I think that is as far as it will go, the main parties are proud of their anti nuclear stance.

tobe honest I don't see a top down solution until there are some significant shortages

Thanks I'm really grateful of the offer but my better half is from Dublin originally so I know it fairly well now.

Fingers crossed - interview not far away.

Do you go to any of the cultivate things - they look pretty good.
