What I wasn't impressed with was the poor thermal quality of the house construction - paper thin walls with no insulation. Where we stayed the first week, when it got cold at night we were told "oh, just stick the electric fire on"

If the home had some thermal mass and insulation they'd be able to keep them cooler by day and warmer by night. It was a real eye opener.
Agreed, except Glenn Murcutt, who designs houses that work with the Australian climate.

I lived in Lancaster a little over a year ago. Well, Galgate mostly - The Bungalow, if you've heard of it, it had a certain fame/notoriety in the right circles, and I miss it greatly.

Hallo!

No, I wasn't at the university. I ended up in Galgate through a happy accident. I was living with my girlfriend at the time in the uni houses (she was doing an MA in Environmental Philosophy) across the canal from the Water Witch. She was finishing her MA and hence we had to move, and I procrastinated so much that it was a desperate last minute thing, and the Bungalow was the only place we could get. We nearly ended up in Morecambe but inbetween seeing the place and phoning the guy to say I'd take it half an hour later it had already gone.

Which turned out to be a very good thing as The Bungalow was an incredibly cool den of iniquity with a lot of history in the activist world (the first G8 Bike Ride stopped there for a night for instance - piccies of the gorgeous garden (with a dozen apple trees) on that site), and one of my housemates became one of the very few people I consider a friend for life.

Alas the landlord sold it to somebody who has probably pulled it down to build something bland (although there were bats living in the attic and two of the trees in the garden are the subject of preservation orders, so it wouldn't be that easy for them). Since I left I've become more aware of PO, CC, etc. and realise what a great place The Bungalow would be to weather the storm. Plenty of garden space, four stables which could be turned into workshops/breweries/whatever (a friend of ours was making biodiesel for his canal boat in one of them) and perhaps most importantly a good community. Not that Galgate was all that amazing - a strangely high proportion of chavs it seemed - but The Bungalow had been a hub for activists of all shapes and sizes for something like a decade. If only we'd had ?350,000 spare to buy it with. I'd love to see what's happened to it since I left.
