C'mon, Yorkshire can't be totally free of Peak Oil people !

Arrange a meet-up, start a community or tell us about an event in the area.

In the old P/S forums forYorkshire I was surpirsed by how few peakers their seemed to be from such a big area of the country!

Post some nice words in this thread!

I'm in Yorkshire

Post by Sky »

I'm in Yorkshire ... just.

I live in Hebden Bridge, close to the Lancashire border.
Sheffield is a long way for me to go by train, usually about 2 and a half hours, so I've been interacting on the NWest board, which met in Manchester last time which is only 50 min away on the train.

If you want to arrange a meet up in Leeds I'd be up for it.

Hi supasap,

Optimistic of what?

That we will avert a Peak-oil related crisis?

1 (very unoptimistic)

That individuals can do a lot to insulate themsleves from the worst of it?

10 (very optimistic)

That the world can avoid repeated resource wars?

1

That the Uk has at least hope of a future with a reasonable std of living?

9

That the Uk will take all nesseccary steps to become self sufficient and low-energy using?

1

That EVENTUALLY after much toil, false starts, hardship, lies, delusions and fasle dawns that the UK will realise what it really needs to do and makes it happen?

I'm in Yorkshire - but not for long I fear.

I'm still in Yorkshire but not for too long I fear. I'm currently living up in leeds but I haven't been able to find a job - basically trying to find a medium sized business that will let me do the job I want whilst researching into Peak Oil and how it would affect their business.
Anybody know of any jobs going in the Leeds to Sheffield area for a first class chemical engineering graduate with a PhD and lots of leadership experience??

Nobody seems to be bothered about PO down here.... most people I talk too seem to think I am crackers or just go mmmm... yeah - then they chunter along as normal as if its just another environmentalists scare story thats not going to really affect anybody!

New regional contact for Leeds

Post by Joe »

Hi all,

I'm going to be the new regional contact for Leeds and I have to confess I'm pretty new to the issues around Peak Oil. Having read into it a bit, I feel compelled to act and imagine that some of you feel the same way.

If anybody wants to meet up and discuss Peak Oil issues, start looking at organising showings of "End of Suburbia" & "Peak Oil: Imposed by Nature", or simply educate me on the subject, give us a shout. I may be able to swing free hire of a city centre pub basement to hold showings of the above DVDs.

I'm thinking that as time goes on and general awareness is raised, we could look at diversifying activities to include things like discussion groups on energy saving, lectures on sustainable energy sources, permaculture workshops or whatever.

I think James Howard is putting together a document on organising events and raising awareness, so we might be able to get some more ideas from that.

I'm in Central Leeds and normally work 9-5, although I'm on call 1 week in 4, so my evening & weekend availability isn't always guaranteed.

Cheers,

Joe

There's a very active/successful Green Party in Huddersfield I believe that might be worthwhile 'peak oil' campaign partners

I am from Wakefield originally but haven't lived there since I was 21. Ended up down in London I'm afraid due to the gravity of jobs down here. Would be nice to get back up North eventually.

Yeah, I agree that we need to start getting a move on with things.

I have made a small start - I wrote to my MP (Hilary Benn) about Peak Oil and got a reply saying that he's forwarded my letter on to Gordon Brown - haven't heard from him yet and to be honest, his recent call for OPEC to increase production didn't exactly demonstrate that he's either read it or taken it very seriously.

Nonetheless, I'd encourage you all to do the same to raise the profile of the issue with Government. If nothing else, it's quite an empowering feeling to give your MP a piece of your mind :)

I've also printed off a load of posters and leaflets available under the "campaign" section of the site. Once I've organised a venue for showing End of Suburbia, I'll get these posters stuck up around various places in Leeds, accompanied by another poster detailing the time & venue for the showing.

Nice one Joe,

A few months back I also informed my MP, she agreed it was an issue, and signed the EDM!

It sure is satisfying to feel that your MP listens.

I wrote to mine too and got a reply the other day, but need to respond to it because it was full of crap. :) I'll mention the EDM, because it hadn't been set up when I first wrote (months back!!).

The MP must be getting sick of me cos I'm always writing to complain about new supermarkets and asking awkward questions about section 106 planning agreements that involve rebuilding council offices, global warming, public transport etc. etc. To be honest, he's quite good at getting other people to reply, but usually they just write a load of b***cks and I tend to give up. Not this time!! :)

I've just joined the local community group, and once I get my foot in the door I might start gradually introducing the concept of peak oil.

Definitely interested in meeting up for any northern events/screenings etc. :)
