Protests in Georgia about a ‘foreign agents’ bill are making the news at the moment.
A quick google shows that the US has had a foreign agents law since 1938. The UK has a foreign agents law, and the EU is working on putting a foreign agents law in place.
There’s a distinct lack of protest about any of these.

“The Foreign Influence Registration Scheme (FIRS) is a two-tier scheme which strengthens the resilience of the UK political system against covert foreign influence and provides greater assurance around the activities of certain foreign powers or entities that are a national security risk. As a result, the UK will be better informed about the nature, scale and extent of foreign influence in UK.”

So why shouldn’t Georgia have the same?

Re: Georgia watch
The Georgian president vetoed the bill as she said she would. I fully expect the role of president to become fully ceremonial in the very near future.

Re: Georgia watch
The people of Georgia see the bill as being something to be used heavily as a repressive measure against them, as it is used in Russia, while in the west we see it used lightly to protect us from the lies and disinformation promulgated by regimes like Russia. Perhaps it should be used against Fox (Faux) News in the US.Default0ptions wrote: ↑16 May 2024, 19:54 Protests in Georgia about a ‘foreign agents’ bill are making the news at the moment.
