The comments section point to a few causes: tropical storm; algal blooms; eutrophication; mass fireworks let off over the water; and the water being too hot. More likely a combination of algal bloom and climate change warming the water reducing the oxygen levels. Fish under stress from those would be more likely to be stunned by a massive fire works display, I presume, for the 4th of July.
