Short video (with subtitles) showing Vladimir Putin criticizing Western Journalists for repeating US propaganda, worth a watch. In my opinion, he's got a point.

I completely agree
We need to ask why our merican friends are demonising Putin and China, etc.... I do realise it is the top of the elitist heirarchy that is doing this.

They are demonising them because they, like us on here, know what's coming down the pipe and so are preparing to fight over the scraps. This is why they tried everything to stop Brexit and why they are doing every thing they can to unseat Corbyn. I really do believe a war is being planned against Russia and China and America needs Europe to be centrally managed so that it can rely on it as a strategic regime in that war. If the EU breaks up and, worse, if some of the ex-EU nations go socialist, then their support in any conflict between East and West cannot be relied upon.

The US is scared of any power large and independent enough to not care about challenging the increasingly dishonest US narrative on world events. In short: Russia and China do not need to toe any US lines, therefore they are unpredictable, uncontrollable and that in itself is threatening to those in the US who not so long ago were trying to arrange a "New American Century". The United States would like a Huxley-esque, Orwellian world where it can convince ordinary people to believe whatever it wants them to believe. Putin makes this impossible.

The cynic in me can't help thinking that with an upcoming decision on whether to replace our existing nuclear deterrent with a newer , expensive , American built one having an evil ogre to aim it at would make sense . Then of course when there isn't a Russian invasion it's proof that said new expensive American nuclear deterrent has been worth all the money.

Whilst the Trident missile is American, I expect the UK built submarines and the UK built nuclear warheads are the expensive part... in fact the I expect we'll just keep the old warheads.

Do they actually build them in a UK ship yard or build the missiles and war heads in a UK factory or do they just buy them from the international corporations like Raytheon and Electric boat and let them decide where to assemble the parts?

The subs are built in the UK at Barrow in Furness to UK designs and the warheads are built in the UK at Burghfield which is part of the Atomic Weapons Establishment, Aldermaston. AWE is, however, run under contract by Lockheed Martin although they are using British design and technology. The guided missile bit is bought in from the US and there are many who believe that the guidance system may have an electronic key in it that can only be unlocked by the US. Safety first!! I'm not sure whether we use UK or US designed/built reactors to power the subs.

This article from The Ecologist tells us that the reactors are British designed and built and that the reason why to British did a volte face in 2006 on nuclear power and have gone to such extreme lengths and costs to retain civil nuclear power in the UK is to maintain the nuclear infrastructure for the design, building, maintenance and regulation of the military reactors.
The civil nuclear program takes all the cost for this off the MOD!! So the civil program via the UK energy user, us that is, subsides the MOD to the tune of billions of pounds a year.

Well I don't suppose it matters which of your pockets the tax man has his fingers in.
And a bit of independence is a good thing.

If you're concerned about runaway military spending, which the USA doesn't seem to be, hiding military expenditure in extremely expensive civilian projects is an issue of honesty.

Lets just hope that they keep N furnace in Rotherham running [electric] so that we could, theoretically, produce steel from scrap. Otherwise you are back to the same old merchant navy grief we had in WWII if we fall out with neighbours.

Well I'll revise my cynicism a little but I end up in sushil_yadav territory . With a decision on replacing trident it makes sense for arms producers on both sides of the Atlantic to promote the idea of an evil madman in the Kremlin .
Edit why does m a d m a n come up as spammer?

madman no longer shows up as spammer.
We USED to have a prolific spammer who went under numerous names all of which began with madm, for example madm1 madm24, madmbest offers and so on.
As a result, I set madm* to appear as spammer. No longer needed as they have gone away.

Ah understood , I was beginning to think that you'd worked out who the evil mastermind was behind all those furniture ads .
