Almost 20,000 households could be connected to the mains gas network due to a recently announced partnership between the four gas distribution networks (GDNs) in Great Britain and agencies that provide grants for central heating systems or help to make homes more energy efficient.
All four of Britain's gas distribution networks have set up partnership agreements, approved by energy regulator Ofgem, allowing them to extend the network to fuel poor customers that currently rely on electricity, coal or fuel oil to heat their homes. The scheme is limited only to Great Britain and does not extend to Northern Ireland.
It is estimated that over 1 million energy customers in Great Britain are not connected to the gas mains, primarily because they are living in rural areas beyond the mains network. Some pockets of urban areas, including some of the country's most deprived, are also without a gas connection. Most of these households use oil as their primary source of heating.

er fine but what if you don't have the wherewithal to repay the grant ?? - heck i would like to
have a decent hot water and heating system - but i manage with my self installed one - a mere ten litres of hot water at any one shot + a instant shower which is far better than what my poor late wife had here when i met her ( vis nothing bar cold water and a kettle )
grants are fine IF they are 100% FOR SOME OF US , but if not - forget it and there is no WAY i am going to get into debt for the sake of a little more convenience
+ before any of you pounce on me and say "but you can afford the Internet "" ( which is something i have had chucked at me before BTW ) - as a " socially isolated person" ( vis no one including most of my family gives a crap if i am alive or dead ) - this is actually MORE important to me - strange as that may seem to some of you
here i can at least find ideas on HOW to find ways to make my meager resources go further - plus have a good moan about life , the universe and everything
ah well enough of my problems .................................

I can see the gas pipe reaching my house just as it is discovered there's no gas left.

That's kind of along the lines I was thinking. You'd have to start syphoning it from that store they're building near you (I bet tbtb'd still have a stash "for emergencies"...

There's a one metre diameter pipeline passing near my house that carries all the gas from a goodly chunk of the North Sea. Haven't quite worked out how to tap it.

SuperBiff is arrested after a minor gas pipleline accident. He claimed that he was simply trying out the rechargeable drill he got for Christmas.

Wouldn't it be better to help rebuild the houses off the gas main to PassivHaus standards so they don't need a heating system? We can start with mine
