BBC News - 05/01/10

A government scheme which gives households £400 off the cost of a new boiler will be launched later.

The Boiler Scrappage Scheme was announced in the Pre Budget Report last month.

According to the government it will help households cut their energy bills, reduce CO2 emissions and support thousands of jobs.

Up to 125,000 households in England could benefit from the scheme, which is costing the government £50m.

Wondeful news indeed. Now if only I could afford the other 2 grand.

A bit like the car scrappage scheme... if you can afford to buy a new car you get a discount.

Sorry to sound 'sour grapes' about this, but it seems that if you are single, working full time, just keeping up with the bills you are so screwed.

Also, if you have done 'the right thing' and already upgraded your boiler...tough. You should have waited!

I also presume that this applies to Gas only boilers? Since an awful lot of rural communities do not have gas and rely on soilid fuel or oil, how do they fare?

I know this makes me sound like a grump old git / daily mail reader. Apologies.

I think I'm in "silly" mode since I wanted to go out and saw up some wood today but our pile (and the saw-horse too) are under snowdrifts.

Oil and LPG are included. Landlords can use it too.
We were in the middle of changing ours, so will try to take advantage.
It will be nice to get a few quid back from HMG for a change.

It can be used towards an A rated gas, oil or lpg boiler, a woodfuel boiler or a heat pump

It also stacks with the Low Carbon Buildings Programme grants http://www.lowcarbonbuildings.org.uk/Gr ... -your-home so might as well by pass the fossil fuel option and go straight for wood fuel or a heat pump.

If you are over 60, live in England but don't have a G rated boiler you can get a £300 rebate through the Warmfront scheme http://www.warmfront.co.uk/heating-rebate-scheme.htm

Glad we got ours in early. Payment received about 3 weeks ago. Surprising straightforward. One up for HMG.
