I was a little surprised to see this headline just now when I switched my computer on - oil prices don't seem to be "soaring" - they've gone up a little bit. What's going on?

Oil has gone up a little, but the main reason is that oil is traded and priced in US$ but we buy petrol at filling stations in Sterling.

Sterling has deppreciated considerably versus the US dollar, from roughly $2=£1 down to about $1-40=£1.

Petrol is quite different from crude oil as well.
Hasnt El Gordo just whacked 2p on it also?

I've noticed that nothing "increases" any more, everything "soars". Just the usual trashy journalism.

Well they've gone up 25ish% since rock bottom of $30something. What's going on?
