This New Year event is getting boring.

Sigh: Do I need to check my battery charge level, and fuel stocks this evening?

Gazprom, the world's largest gas producer, supplies a quarter of the European Union's gas needs, or 42% of EU's gas imports.
PM asked our government, who said only 2% of our gas comes from Russia, so they aren't worried.

That's a con.

If Norway is forced to supply Europe, then our gas feed will be reduced by rather more than a few percent .. worst case about 22%.
June 2008

The National Grid has warned that gas supplies from Europe this winter look less certain.

In its outlook for energy supplies to the UK this winter, the National Grid said as gas reserves in the North Sea dwindle and the UK becomes increasingly dependent on imports from Norway and elsewhere, it found itself in a bind to predict how much gas will actually come to UK shores.

National Grid is forecasting that supplies from the Continental Shelf for next winter will decline by ten per cent.

It also warns that is no guarantee that gas will come in from abroad, despite the potential for increased imports through the Ormen Lange gas pipeline from Norway.

"We acknowledge the potential for higher deliveries to the Continent (from Norway) at the expense of the UK," the report said.

Interesting comment on the Times article
i really dont care about global warming, but these kinds of things are reasons for us to be investing in energy supplies that arent reliant on us digging up dead plants and animals.

will, grimsby, uk
People may be approaching the problems from different angles, but we're all after the same solutions.

Glad I use electric heating, with LPG as a backup although it would struggle to cope in this cold weather. Still dreaming of a passive solar house :D

Russia has stopped all gas supplies to Ukraine after the collapse of talks to end a row over unpaid bills and prices.

... although this time Russia is trying to prevent problems for Europe by diverting some gas through Belarus ...
The volume of Russian natural gas transiting Belarus en route to European customers has increased by one-quarter, a Belarusian official told the Belapan news agency on Thursday.

An official at Gazprom's headquarters in Moscow said: "We have fully cut off supplies to Ukraine as of 10am (0700 GMT) today."

"Usually we supply 390 million cubic metres per day, of which 300 million is transit gas for Europe. Today supplies are running at 300 million cubic metres. We continue supplying Europe in full," Reuters quoted him as saying.
Last time wasn't part of the problem the syphoning off some of the gas....

Bulgaria, Poland, Romania and Hungary note falls in supply, though the main pipeline through the Czech Republic to Germany -- Europe's biggest economy -- was working normally.

If this crisis between Russia and the Ukraine goes on long enough I wont feel so stupid in having signed up to fixed energy prices until 2011!

If it gets resolved, prices could fall 33% and I will be seriously out of pocket!
