A major witness in the US case against Julian Assange has just admitted fabricating key accusations in the indictment against the Wikileaks founder. These dramatic revelations emerged in an extensive article published on 26 June in Stundin, an Icelandic newspaper. The paper interviewed the witness, Sigurdur Ingi Thordarson, a former WikiLeaks volunteer, who admitted that he had made false allegations against Assange after being recruited by US authorities. Thordarson, who has several convictions for sexual abuse of minors and financial fraud, began working with the US Department of Justice and the FBI after receiving a promise of immunity from prosecution. He even admitted to continuing his crime spree while working with the US authorities.

So...Assange has been swapped for Anne Sacoolas. Nobody is saying so, but that's too much of a co-incidence. So much for justice. In the end it is all about politics.

Julian is still in Belmarsh, seemingly forgotten by the press.

If he had only picked an Embassy with a garden he would have probably still been there. Could have earned his keep growing veggies.

Assange wins right to appeal his extradition ruling to the US.

Looks like this is going to drag on for some time to come. If there is a general election soon it will be interesting to see how the former DPP handles the case.

It needs to be ended.

Assange agrees plea deal with the US , will plead guilty and then be freed as time spent in UK jail will be counted as covering the sentence. Has already left the UK.

The Americans wanted it ended, the UK wanted it ended and the Australians wanted him home. The deal was that he pleaded guilty to something which most people believe wasn't a crime at all. The US is trying to claim that it has international jurisdiction -- that it has the right punish non-US-citizens for allegedly committing crimes outside of the US which aren't crimes outside the US. That isn't going to stick though -- it was something Assange had to do in order to secure his release, but I will be very surprised if he has both agreed to and will abide by any agreement to continue to admit any guilt now he is out. Nobody knows what is going to happen, but he has just been welcomed home as a hero and journalists all over the world have an interest in making clear that Assange did nothing wrong and that the US has no legitimate jurisdiction outside US territory, regardless of the guilty plea.

Assange is free, but the argument about what really happened and the implications for the future of the "free" world is only just starting.

I wonder if Edward Snowden is going to do a plea deal. Russia is probably not looking too nice at the moment.

From what I heard Trump said he would pardon him so maybe Biden had to act.

Compare and contrast.
Former Republican vice-president Mike Pence, however, described Assange’s plea deal as “a miscarriage of justice and dishonors the service and sacrifice of the men and women of our armed forces and their families”.
Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote: "Julian Assange is set to be released after being held for years for the crime of committing journalism."
