Indeed, which is why these are comparable to 2012 when Lincolnshire wasn't involved.biffvernon wrote:Not everywhere has elections. We don't in Lincolnshire.

Yeah, I expect a good number of his detractors fully expected him to fail pretty quickly. He's done well in the by-elections (but they don't mean much) and these local elections are his biggest test to date. If Labour are seen to do well (which I think is likely given the mess the Tories are in just now) then it secures Corbyn's place for some time to come. At that point I expect those in the PLP to, as you say, act in the own interests and try to make the best of (what they see as) a bad situation.UndercoverElephant wrote:However, I suspect a lot of them were working on an assumption that Labour would do poorly in the coming elections, and were biding their time with respect to plotting his removal. If Labour actually do well then they might have to accept that he is not going to be removed any time soon, and decide to stop sniping/plotting, in their own best interests.

Similar situation here. I wasn't interested in voting a Labour coalition with the SNP, a party I could not vote for.kenneal - lagger wrote:I voted for my siting MP, who is a Tory, last time because he has told me on numerous occasions that he "is onside with climate change" and he is a good constituency MP and an honest bloke. Since this last election, however, his loyalty to the party has overtaken his concern over climate change and his honesty so I won't be voting for him next time.
Whether I will vote Green next time and probably waste a vote or vote LIbDem, oooh! the thought of it, to get the Tories out of the constituency I have yet to make up my mind.
In addition, I voted Tory as this suited my pocket; it suits me just right. Saying that, the Tories are basically self-destructing so might need to cast my vote elsewhere.

I actually ran into somebody in a pub on Saturday evening who is nearing the end of a PhD in Political Science, the precise subject being something like "how much does political allegiance influence voting patterns." I asked him a straight question: "The tories govern in the interest of the top 2% to 5%, so why do another 15 to 20% vote tory? Because their parents did?" His answer was: "Yes."clv101 wrote:I'm really interested in why people vote for the Conservatives.

One of mine did and the other, who I respected more, didn't.
I grew up in an era of striking unions and weak government when the government of the day had to go to the IMF for a loan because of the sinking economy. As far as I could see the communist unions wanted to take us down the Soviet route and were prepared to break, and had a very good go at breaking, industry and the economy with it in order to further that aim. The Labour Party were in the pocket of the unions and were inept. Nationalisation was a disaster with rising wages, falling output and awful quality; no one in their right mind bought anything British because it was a waste of money. Wages were rising so fast that eventually the Labour government had to imposed a wage freeze!
Then there was Tony Bleh and his pension thieving Chancellor, who is still causing me suffering!
That is the background to why I have voted Conservative.
