Groan, we'll go the way of the USA, where they are probably looking to arm midwives to increase safety in maternity wards.

VT, your "open season" idea won't work in the UK, the police much prefer to have one man shoot 1000 deer per year than 10 men shoot 100 each. Rifles are heavily restricted, and IMHO likely to become more so in future. I am currently applying for .308 and the process is likely to take at least 8 weeks and probably come with mentoring conditions despite having owned firearms since 1984. This is why new shooters aren't culling deer, it's a deliberate policy to remove all firearms from the public.
I am aware of your situation, as deplorable as it is, and I know of no realistic remedy for it. I put forward the open season as the minimum that will actually solve your deer over-population problem knowing full well you have no chance of it being adopted so you are doomed to being subjected to several misguided and expensive failed attempts.
Do not come to this f***ing board and start going on about the insane f***ing firearms laws in your insane f***ing country. OK? Message understood?

The truth is this: In EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY on this planet apart from ONE, death and injury by firearms has been in long-term decline for decades. In the United States, it has remained consistent. OK? The rest of the world is not backwards. The United States is backwards. Utterly backwards. The entire f***ing population is f***ing bonkers.

How to win friends and convince them of your case. NOT!!! This is not a private forum, so you have no business telling anyone not to post their views. Have you been at the bottle?

What rubbish. Have you heard of the AK47? owned (and used) by millions around the world. The UK has more deaths from gun crime than a few decades ago. Mostly drugs wars.

Another questionable assertion. I would suggest most people in any population are relatively mild and placid. It is a minority that cause the problems and unfortunately many in the population follow them, or do nothing.

I've just finished watching this film about a bloodbath in the rural West Country, and come back to another "discussion" about the need for more guns

I've never said this before, to anybody on this forum, but that wasn't called for, UE. I usually like your posts, but that one was wide of the mark.

If I focus on just knife crime and managed to ban all knives then I would not be surprised if knife crime decreased.

It wouldn't stop people from beating each other to death though.

Guns, in the hands of the victims of crime, make for good defence. All gun law ever does is disarm the victims.

However, in this country one of the problems with deer culling is the people population density. There aren't that many places where you can safely shoot deer without some numpty calling the Police 'cos they saw a 'man with a gun'.

Having a bad day are we? I have them myself from time to time.
My open season solution to your deer over population problem does not require the use of firearms. English long bows , cross bows and modern compound bows are more then up to the task. What gets the job done is having the season "open" for every citizen without rules , prerequisites, licenses fees, or other class distinctions being applied. Much more on that if anyone wishes to discuss it.
As to gun crime in America consider that 46% of the homicides in America are committed by black males which make up just 7 % of the population. What would you propose we do about that?

VT...

Sorry for the bits I misunderstood. I jumped the gun.

Get rid of the guns. The entire debate in the US about firearms is sick, sick joke. Utterly pathetic. An entire nation of immature idiots, when it comes to this topic. And some others.

I think that those that think taking the guns away from the American public will remove any guns from the hands of the drug gangs and of organised crime and will result in everybody playing nice are the ones with the immature attitude.

Criminals in this country also have no problem in getting hold of guns. And we also have a problem with black on black violence to the extent that the Metropolitan Police have a special squad to deal with it.

Er, how about stop being a deeply racist nation in which life chances are determined by skin colour?

(Obama is an outlier, in statistical parlance, and does not reduce the validity of my generalisation.)

By the way, vt, don't get the impression that the British Isles are over-run by deer. I live in a very rural area and there are what I call too many non-native deer. I actually saw one about a month ago and the last time it snowed I found one set of tracks crossing my land. It's not actually a plague!

It's a plague in Sussex. I spend a lot of time wandering around the countryside and deer are almost continually present. It is very unusual for me to go out for any length of time and not see deer.

What we need is a co-ordinated firearms policy that is sufficiently organised that it is able to take guns from people who have a record of violence or unstable behaviour. In recent murder cases involving legally held firearms the owners have included a man with a record of domestic violence, a man who had been repeatedly reported as a suspected paedophile and banned from running boys gymnastics clubs, a man who felt he had been cheated in a will and had made threats to family members.

Criminals have easy access to guns from abroad and some sections of our society are not afraid to use them, you can probably blame Hip-Hop for that although the bleeding-hearts will probably say it's the fault of society for alienating young black men.

Improve Customs checks, improve background checks on licence holders and enforce the minimum sentences and the problem will be reduced.

It will cost money, and whilst the majority of gun crime is drug dealers shooting at other drug dealers there is not much political gain to be made.

Exactly. Remove the drug trafficking related homicides by all races from the gun statistics and the suicides which are 60% of gun deaths and there isn't much left even in the US. We have a drug problem not a gun problem. The fact that the US is a very rich country and supports the poor at levels that let them afford illegal drugs in vast quantities confuses and hides other issues that are the direct result of that drug use.
