Er, the article did have a note of caution
It would appear that Mrs May is about to resign.

We’d do well to be a little cautious about whether this is actually going to happen. Just saying.

We are reading that her resignation will be announced tomorrow..............
This is true. Things are just about as unpredictable as it is possible to get.

I heard on the news last night that most non UK EU citizens in the UK couldn't vote because the Electoral Commission hadn't been able to get a form to them in time for them to fill in to ensure that they voted in only one EU country.

Yeah, I just read that. Additionally, it seems most UK residents living abroad but who still have the right to vote, did not get their forms either. It's been a total bloody shambles.

About time. Pretty much whatever your political views May's destined to go down as one of our worst leaders in history.

Surely she can't be followed by some creature even worse?

I still believe brexit will be thwarted, yes. But the story now focuses on Johnson - what is his policy going to be and can/will parliament stop him if he takes over the leadership committed to no deal.

All of the Tory candidates will be considered worse by at least a significant minority of the Tory party. May tried to hold together an institution that was fundamentally split down the middle, and in the end achieved nothing but three wasted years

Worse than her in terms of political capability? I doubt it. She has exhausted the brexit middle ground. Whoever takes over cannot continue her strategy, and there's a limit to what alternatives are available. I think the whole deadlocked situation is going to start unraveling now, and whoever takes over cannot just pretend it isn't happening.

Johnson has a similar relationship to truth and honesty as does Trump. If he calls a snap election he could regain a lot of support from Brexit party by calling for no deal exit. However, he will have his fingers crossed behind his back. He will do whatever is best for Johnson at any given moment.

Whomever replaces her is bound to be regarded as even worse by a significant minority.
Suppose we get a true brexiter who actually wants to leave the EU. They will be regarded as "even worse" by those who want to remain in, or at least partly in. Any such leader will probably have the same problem of the house voting against leaving.

Alternatively the new leader might favour staying in the EU in all but name. Calling it Brexit but remaining subject to most EU laws and regulations, simple replacing "ever closer union" with "ever closer alignment"
Any such leader would be regarded as "even worse" by those who want to leave properly.

That will end badly for him, and I think he knows it. That is why it is going to be very interesting to see exactly what his campaign message is, both for the leadership and a subsequent general election.

The time for fudging your position on brexit is over, at least for anybody who is contending for power. Anyone who tries that tactic will not get elected.

Agreed. But it is not at all obvious how that is going to happen.
