Pushbacks: Migrants accuse Greece of sending them back out to sea

Post by UndercoverElephant »

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-55231203
In the early hours of a Sunday in late November, 16-year-old Jeancy Kimbenga tried to reach Europe for a third time. He was on one of three dinghies that landed on the Greek island of Lesbos that day from Turkey.

On that occasion, as with his two previous attempts, Jeancy claims he was forcibly returned to Turkish waters.

So-called pushbacks, without consideration of a migrant's individual circumstances and without any possibility of applying for asylum, are illegal under international human rights law.

Greece has denied it uses such methods, insisting it is complying with European and international law and protecting the borders of the European Union.
Greece clearly is using such methods.

Can you blame them? They are being overrun with migrants which no other EU country wants to share so what can they do?

Mob demand release of illegal migrants, police agree.

We'll just have to send all illegal migrants straight up to Scotland then and let them welcome them. Most of that country is empty after all.

I just hope that police in the rest of the UK don't capitulate in the face of a violent mob. That way lies anarchy

Because the police backed down? What if the police had enforced the law and allowed the van to be moved with its contents?

Is this the same poster who was praising extinction rebellion not so long ago? Direct action against the status quo always risks violence, but it can come from either side

XR protesters didn't get violent when arrested and moved.

Because the police capitulated in a situation with a potential for violence. Now everyone knows in Glasgow, and possibly the whole of Scotland, if you want to get away with anything just get a big crowd to turn up and the police will give in.

I notice they have delayed reopening of South Glasgow for a while. I wonder if all the social distance doesn't matter warriors, will apologise to the small and micro businesses that won't open?

And putting the blame on one section of the community will be frowned.

HMG "Authorise turning back migrant boats"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58495948

It remains to be seen if many boats will actually be turned back. Should upset the French though.

Don't hold your breath, there are numerous international treaties which make this impossible. The boat would have to be objectively safe, capable of remaining at sea, victualised, and fuelled.
