Don't worry, the oil under the Falklands will be extracted by submersible, fully-automated/minimally manned, nuclear-powered, deep sea drilling/processing rigs, with pipelines to the supertanker terminals located at either Fox Bay or Port Howard (West Falklands), Port San Carlos or Goose Green (East Falklands). Allegedly.
Yeah and the Argies won't mind, not one little bit! :)
Where d'ya think the refineries are going to be built?

More seriously, we still have a garrison and RAF squadron there...can't think why, can you?

Personally, I doubt that the Falklands will ever be exploited in time to do a damn thing. My main worry is for the islanders, they have to import pretty much everything and will be totally screwed post peak.

Erm...wind turbines? Very popular in Argentina, Chile and the like. I bet it's more than a bit drafty in the Falklands...

As for motor-fuel, what's their population density? Any chance of growing some oilseed rape in some of the more sheltered spots? They do have the advantage of being a very small community, so 1 or 2 dynamic characters could push good ideas through. Transition Town Falklands... :)

If memory serves, the soil quality is really poor and it's mostly sheep farming with virtually no land suitable for arable production. In fact, I don't there's any arable production there.

Oh, there's plenty of wind, South Atlantic storms are a nightmare.

Just done a bit of digging...a 1998 survey suggests there might be up to 60 million barrels of oil under there. So I'm even more convinced that it will never be exploited.

Yeah S'berg you're probably right, I always thought of them as being a bit like Scotland, ragged hills with rain lashing away all the good soil to the West, a bit more sheltered, with better soil, to the East (Leeward). But they're probably small enough to have wind and rain erode the soil over the entire area.

They'll have to slum it with wind-power, wool, mutton and the occasional fish.
