Brazil strikes oil, but OPEC ambitions may prove costly
BRASILIA: Brazil?s announcement that it has found new oil reserves maybe vast enough to give it OPEC-style clout is certainly good long-term news for its economy and the state-controlled oil giant Petrobras.

But Brasilia shouldn?t be looking to elbow its way alongside neighbor Venezuela or the petro-rich Arab countries anytime soon, analysts warned.

That?s because the precious oil and gas deposits lie deep undersea way off Brazil?s southeast coast ? making recovery a costly and time-consuming prospect.

...

Petrobras said other tests were still underway on a nearby zone that could prove even bigger.
Can't we send a submarine there to go and plant the European Union flag on the sea bed or something?
The news sent the shares in Petrobras ? and in British energy group BG and Portugal?s Petrogal-Galp Energia, which are its minor partners in exploiting part of the Tupi field ? soaring. But by Friday, the celebrations quieted a little as thought was given on how to get at the oil.
Hic... at least they managed to have a bit of a knees up. Just need to find someone to do all the hard work now.
...
Schaeffer said the Tupi find would likely mean Brazil would become independent in terms of oil production, no longer needing to import, he said. But for it to become an exporter, the possible reserves in the second area will have to be confirmed.
So I wonder what impact this might have on Brazil's ethanol industry? With so much money to be made from exporting the stuff, will it be tempting to keep the ethanol fuel infrastructure in place? Or will there be all sorts of internal pressures to flow most of that nice light oil towards their own domestic markets?

A guy from BP at the Energy Institute's conference last week described Tupi as a book keeping exercise, simply moving a few Gb from the "yet to find" side of the ledger to the "found" side with zero implications regarding peak oil. This was just after the government's representative had gushed over the find as illustrative of there being much more to find.

Something we all need to remember is that we have burned around 1000 Gb, reserves are around 800 Gb, URR is expected to be around 2000 Gb leaving 200 Gb yet to find (2P, crude + condensate numbers). Many finds such as Tupi are in the game plan, in fact it is very likely that we will find further whole new provinces as large as the North Sea in the future.

Peak oilers expect to find another Saudi Arabia ? just not another five.

The Oil Drum: Tupi, the new kid in town

Last week the name was Tupi, a field found by Petrobras in the Campos Basin off Brasil; with prospects of 5 to 8 Gb of intermedium gravity oil (28? API) and gas, it boosted the country's reserves of hydrocarbons by 50%. A remarkable find (for today's standards) announced again in a period of high prices.

The Oil Drum considers what we know about this find, the challenges and what it means for Petrobras and the world.

Has the field actually been drilled?

In other words, have they managed to get through that salt layer?

Or has it been detected solely via acoustic imaging etc?

Yeah, but not all in the one place at the same time...
