Nafeez refers to Professor Charles Hall and his concept of EROI and an EROI of 4.8 for tar sands oil and 5 for shale. In his book, Energy And The Wealth Of Nation, Hall says that energy sources require an EROI of at least 5 to be a net contributor to a nations economy to make up for the servicing requirements for the energy source. It's no wonder that the world's economy is in the doldrums now with up to a third of its energy supply coming in at an EROI near, at or below 5.

And our politicians are happy for us to rely on energy from such sources. Just shows their ignorance.
