The dark ages were indeed Dark.

I think this is a bit of a myth. The historians of old called them the Dark ages as they didn't know what was going on. Modern understanding is increasing rejecting any pejorative use of the term. There may not have been much Latin literature or grand architecture but life was pretty good for many.
