Climate change and Peak Oil will require huge changes to the way we live. Government can do so much, but local communities cannot afford to wait for government to tell us what to do. We have to do what we can to prepare. There are many organisations locally that are now taking an interest in these issues and others who are already taking practical steps. These efforts need to be better known and better co-ordinated. Ben, who is from Totnes - a 'Transition Town' - will tell us about the Transition Towns initiative which has so far been adopted by 19 towns in Britain and Ireland.

A number of people have independently drawn our attention to Transition Towns, and made enquiries. In response to this interest, we have organised this meeting. Our objectives for the meeting are:

*
To increase awareness of the Transition Towns approach.
*
To form a steering group to take the first steps towards turning Dorchester into a Transition Town
*
To encourage people in Weymouth and elsewhere in Dorset to take similar initiatives.

We are approaching a number of people and organisations who we think might wish to participate, but we are making no assumptions as to the membership or leadership of the steering group. We want the process to be as open as possible.

We would be most grateful if you could pass this information on to anyone else who you think may be interested.

For further information about the Transition Towns approach visit http://www.transitiontowns.org/ On the website there is a link to request a 40 page primer by email from Ben Brangwyn. In order to save him the trouble of responding to multiple requests, you may wish to request a copy from David Smith by replying to this email. It comes as a pdf file. He cannot undertake to make paper copies at this stage. Can you please help out by printing a copy for any friend who does not have a computer?

For any other information either phone Bill North on 01305 264412 or reply to this email.

yours sincerely
