FOSSIL FOOLS DAY 1st April 2008
Posted: 28 Mar 2008, 17:40
For anyone interested, here is the email poster for Fossil Fools Day events in London:
Despite introducing the Climate Change Bill, the government is set to approve, within the next month, the construction of a new coal-fired power plant in Kingsnorth, with 8 others closely following. If these are approved, the emissions from these new plants will cancel out any other future efforts we do to cut our greenhouse gas emissions. It is therefore essential that as many of us as possible voice our opposition to these schemes !
What better day to pick for that than April Fool's Day, which is being marked by climate change activists across the world as Fossil Fool's Day, a day of action against the climate wrecking fossil fuel industry. Therefore,
WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN US ON ONE OR BOTH PROTESTS AGAINST NEW COAL POWER :
1) Protest circus for a coal Fossil Fool
(BERR, 1 Victoria Street, London, 8 am on 1 April 2008)
The London World Development Movement groups are co-ordinating a protest outside the Department for Enterprise Business and Regulatory Reform (or BERR) to laugh at the minister for business, John Hutton. John Hutton is currently set to make a right fool of the government's climate policy if he signs off on EON's new Kingsnorth power station.
Everyone's welcome to join in the collective hilarity and to demand Hutton takes the Kingsnorth decision very seriously. There will be a real circus feel, with jugglers, clowns and acrobats, so don't hesitate to bring juggling balls or wear your squeaky nose or silly hat.
Protest starts at 8am and will be over in time for you to be at work. Contact Rachel on 0207 8204900 for more information
See the page on Facebook or just turn up.
2) Building a coal power station in Westminster !
(Meet at Parliament Square, 11am on 1 April 2008. Lobby starts at 2pm.)
People & Planet network will be building a coal power station complete with 12ft cooling towers in Westminster, while people dressed in Jesters hats and Gordon Brown masks will 'burn' a mock Climate Change Bill.
As many people as possible are needed to join the action and even better to make a meeting with your MP for that day. You can ask for a meeting with your MP through the Parliamentary Switchboard on 020 7219 3000 or find them here http://www.theyworkforyou.com/

TO TAKE FURTHER ACTION:
Demand a public inquiry: Write to the Minister for Business, John Hutton who has to decide whether or not to give new coal the go-ahead. You can also take action against new coal on Greenpeace, People and Planet and Christian Aid's websites.
Write to your MP: writing a personal letter to your MP to ask them to support a public inquiry into Kingsnorth will have more effect. You can find your MP at www.writetothem.com. People and Planet have info on MPs to target, letter writing and organising face to face meetings.
