I was a bit disappointed by the Earthship as it has a large woodchip boiler to heat it. The underground houses at Hockerton don't need any extra heating and even use the heat from the conservatories to increase the COP of their air to water heat pumps which supply the domestic hot water.

Some of the materials used for the Earthship are more natural but I think these are cancelled out by the woodchip boiler. I'm sure, with a bit of thought, and not much expense, they could could have upgraded the insulation to get rid of the boiler.
