PEAK OIL :
HIGH TIDE FOR AN OIL ADDICTED WORLD
1pm Saturday 25th November 2006
Dragon Hall, Covent Garden, London
2006 has seen awareness of Climate Change reach new levels and those who have said for so long that something should be done to reduce CO2 emissions are seeing action slowly ? perhaps too slowly ? beginning to happen.
The incredible levels of CO2 in the Earth?s atmosphere are a result of the massive explosion of the human population in the 20th century and the resulting use of resources ? especially the burning of fossil fuels ?due to our rising living standards and expectations.
Perhaps the most incredible of the fossil fuels that provide the energy to the cogs of modern industrial society is oil. We have allowed it to permeate every aspect of our lives. It is so ubiquitous; we are blind to, or choose to be ignorant of, how dependent we are on it.
?Ninety per cent of all our transportation, whether by land, air or sea, is fuelled by oil. Ninety-five per cent of all goods in shops involve the use of oil. Ninety-five per cent of all our food products require oil use. Just to farm a single cow and deliver it to market requires six barrels of oil, enough to drive a car from New York to Los Angeles.?
- Jeremy Leggett
And now a wide range of independent oil experts and analysts are saying that within the next decade we will reach a point when we will extract as much as we ever have before or ever will again.
That point is called Peak Oil. It is the high tide for an oil addicted world. And it will change our lives as we know it. The recent large increases in energy prices are just the beginning of the dramatic story.
Climate Change campaigners have said for a long time we should change the way we live?Peak Oil means we will be forced to change.
PowerSwitch, a UK organisation dedicated to raising discussion and awareness of Peak Oil invites you to a Peak Oil presentation and debate at Dragon Hall, Covent Garden, London on Saturday 25th November at 1pm.
The presentation is designed to comprehensively introduce Peak Oil in ?easy to grasp? terms the causes, the consequences, the alternatives, the economics, and perhaps most importantly, what you can do as we enter the second half of the age of oil.
Entry is open to all. This event is ideal for anyone new to Peak Oil or wanting to know more about it, particularly if you are interested in Climate Change or sustainability.
