A new material made from carbon nanotubes can generate electricity by scavenging energy from its environment:

MIT engineers have discovered a new way of generating electricity using tiny carbon particles that can create a current simply by interacting with liquid surrounding them.

My thoughts are that this might work quite happily on a small scale for a mobile phone or similar but if you tried uprating it to power say a house or something bigger there would probably be a problem with high electrical currents or static charge build ups in the local environment. You don't get something for nothing in nature!
