Hydro-electricity? Fusion? Thermal Depolarization? Do we have any other real alternatives? Including utility scale energy storage.

Seems pretty daft. It's more expensive, more complex and slightly less efficient than resistive heating. What an I missing?

Totally daft.
Cant see any gain whatsoever in this idea if compared to resistance heating.

Sounds like a good way to attract research funding, some of which may be awarded by non technical politicians "we must explore all possibilities" and "microwave ovens are an eficient way to heat food, and must therefore be a good thing for heating homes"
"Installers and owners of emergency diesels must assume that they will have to run for a week or more"

The advantage for government is that these microwave boilers do not have the Coefficient of Performance that the heat pump does and so electricity consumption will be higher than for a heat pump only heating regime. This is good for "Growth" and therefore the economy although not so good for the environment as we would probably need a nuke or two to power them.

Also this'
"would cost about £3,500, the same as an equivalent gas boiler"

Just paid £1468 for a gas boiler to be fitted to a property. Either shoddy journalism or ramping up the project
